Recently, there have been a number of stories in the news that have lead the American Board of Plastic Surgery to remind patients to check on the credentials of their surgeons. What many patients do not realize is that it is possible to be licensed in one region, without being licensed to practice nationally. A credible, reliable plastic surgeon should have all of their certifications in place.

It is important to research any medical professional that you intend to visit. This means checking references (online resources can be very helpful), checking their credentials, and speaking with the doctor to determine how comfortable you are with him/her. Unfortunately, too many patients choose their surgeons based on price alone and that can lead to undesirable results.

Do not be afraid to be thorough – after all it is you as a patient that is paying for the surgery, and more importantly, it is your body. Any big decision should be carefully reviewed and considered.
