ABOUT LABIAPLASTY
Labiaplasty is a surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedure that has gained increasing popularity in recent years. However, many women remain hesitant due to misconceptions about its invasiveness. This article aims to dispel these concerns and provide a clearer understanding of what patients can expect from their labiaplasty procedure at Reflections Medical by Dr. Fiorillo.
What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure that alters the size or shape of the inner and outer labia or vaginal lips. Overly large vaginal lips or labia minora (inner lips) that hang below the labia majora (outer lips) can cause friction, painful sex, increased risk of skin infection, and emotional discomfort, especially in intimate settings. Some women are naturally born with large or asymmetrical labia, but they can also develop as a result of pregnancy and natural childbirth. The goal of labiaplasty is to improve both the appearance and function of the labia so that women can feel more confident and comfortable in their bodies.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LABIAPLASTY?
Ideal Candidates
The primary reason why women seek Labiaplasty is typically because they are dissatisfied with the labial tissues that protrude outside the vaginal openings. This could be caused by several reasons such as genetics, childbirth, or simply the natural aging process.
Labiaplasty Surgery
Surgery can understandably seem daunting, but labiaplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia, depending on your preference. There are two main techniques that can be used:
- Trim Method: Excess tissue is removed from the edge of the labia minora to reduce its size and eliminate a dark border.
- Wedge Method: A V-shaped wedge of tissue is excised from the thickest part of the labia and the edges are sutured together; this preserves the natural wavy border.
The choice of labiaplasty technique depends on your specific surgical goals and symptoms you hope to address. Both techniques will be discussed in detail at your initial consultation with Dr. Fiorillo so that you have clear expectations of your surgical procedure.
Labiaplasty Recovery
Because labiaplasty is a minimally invasive surgery, patients can also enjoy a relatively short recovery period. Although strenuous exercise and sexual intercourse should be avoided for six weeks, most patients can return to work and daily activities after 1-2 weeks. Mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common but will improve significantly within the first week. We recommend the use of anti-inflammatory medications and cold compresses to reduce swelling and relieve any discomfort you may experience.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS LIKE AFTER LABIAPLASTY?
Recovery & Results
After Labiaplasty Pearl River patients may be prescribed pain medications to offset any pain and discomfort you may feel.
Your doctor will provide post-operative instructions to ensure your recovery is a smooth process. It is common to experience swelling and bruising in the vaginal area, but it will subside with proper care and time. The recovery process will vary on a case to case basis, but typically most women can return to their daily schedules one to two weeks following the procedure. You will be advised to refrain from sexual intercourse for six weeks as it can prolong the healing process.
Target Areas
OTHER AREAS TO TARGET IN ADDITION TO LABIAPLASTY INCLUDE:
Clitoral hood reduction
This removes the excess folds that can become more prominent when the labia is shortened during a Labiaplasty procedure. Without a clitoral hood reduction, a top-heavy look may result following a labiaplasty.
Labia majoraplasty
By removing excess tissue, this surgery reduces the size of the outer labia majora.
Monsplasty
Bulging in the upper part of the vulva is reduced by removing the skin with liposuction. The right techniques for your Labiaplasty procedure will be determined at your consultation with Dr. Fiorillo.
