The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the world’s largest plastic surgery specialty organization, recently released a powerful public service announcement, highlighting the dangers of “white coat deception.” What is white coat deception? Essentially, it is the practice of physicians offering plastic surgery procedures without board certification. Press “play” below to watch the 30-second PSA.
ABC News also reports on this recent phenomenon, explaining that, “In 48 states it is currently legal in the United States for doctors who are not certified by the board of plastic surgeons to practice cosmetic and plastic surgery.” Concerned? So are we.

“After going into surgery for a simple repair of her breast implants, Dinora Rodriguez …awoke from the procedure to find that her plastic surgeon had left her with conjoined breasts…” reports ABC. Ms. Rodriguez, who is 40 years old, explained that her biggest mistake was not checking her doctor’s credentials. And, according to the report, “Without her knowledge or permission, the surgeon had also nip/tucked her eyelids….” So, how could this have happened?

While Ms. Rodriguez’s doctor was supposedly licensed to practice plastic surgery in California, she was not “board certified” by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Read on to find out why board certification matters.

Choosing a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

What does it mean to be “board certified?” The American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes only one certifying body for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For someone to call themselves a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, he or she must be officially recognized by this organization. These doctors stand out because they have demonstrated knowledge and experience above and beyond regular medical training.

So, when it comes to choosing a plastic surgeon, always make sure you’re dealing with someone who’s board certified. If you have any doubts, ask to see credentials. It’s your right!
