We all know that plastic surgery can be life-changing, but can some procedures actually improve your quality of life? According to new research from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the answer may be yes. In a recent press release, the ASPS reports a new study that looked at 360 plastic surgery patients. According to the release, “Patients undergoing cosmetic liposuction and/or abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck”) procedures report significant improvements in self-esteem and quality of life.” This information comes from the April issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, a medical journal published by the ASPS.

Plastic Surgery Procedures for Reducing Abdominal Fat

Sometimes diet and exercise simply aren’t enough! One of the most common concerns among patients is persistent, exercise-resistant abdominal fat. Here are two plastic surgery procedures that may help:

  • Tummy tuckTummy tuck surgery—also known as abdominoplasty—is a cosmetic procedure aimed at flattening and shaping the waist and abdomen. During the procedure, we remove excess fat and skin and tighten underlying muscles. Based on numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were over 115K tummy tuck procedures performed in 2011.
  • Liposuction: Liposuction is one of the oldest and most popular cosmetic procedures to date. Liposuction is used to remove unwanted, exercise-resistant fat from the body. Using a special suction tool, fat can be removed from the abdomen, waist, hips and many other locations. There were over 200,000 liposuction procedures performed in 2011, says the latest data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
