Even in these depths of winter, it’s never too early to begin thinking about the slowly approaching summer months when a bikini once again takes its place in your wardrobe. Even through diligent exercise and a healthy diet, many people find it nearly impossible to achieve a flat, toned belly. With that said, there is no reason to give up on your goal, especially with popularity of the abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” procedure. A tummy tuck is a procedure that enhances the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles for patients with pockets of loose and sagging skin that do not respond to diet and exercise.

As the tummy tuck procedure is a major surgery, great care should be taken when deciding to undergo the procedure. Candidates should be physically and mentally healthy, and be exercising regularly and following a healthy diet that is not making an impact on those stubborn fat areas. It is equally important to note that abdominoplasty is not a treatment for obesity.

In a full abdominoplasty, Dr. Fiorillo will make an incision from hip to hip just above the pubic area. Another incision is then made in order to free the navel from the surrounding skin. From there, the skin is detached from the abdominal wall to reveal the muscle and fascia. The muscle and fascia are then tightened with sutures. A dressing and sometimes a compression garment are then applied, and excess fluid is drained.

In the case of a partial abdominoplasty, a smaller incision is made in the pubic area, and the skin is lifted up to the navel to remove localized fat and tighten muscles in the lower abdominal area. As this procedure is less invasive than a full abdominoplasty, it is performed on an outpatient basis in generally under two hours.
