Dr. Fiorillo: Breast Lift expert
Aging, heredity, gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and/or weight loss can all contribute to the potential drooping of women’s breasts. A mastopexy (breast lift), is performed to return youthful shape and lift breasts that have sagged or lost volume and firmness. Dr. Fiorillo is a breast lift specialist, able to help restore your breasts to a youthful figure with an uplifted breast profile.
Occasionally, breast augmentation is desired in addition to the lift, in order to help balance out the breasts or give them a firmer look and feel. Dr. Fiorillo recommends gummy bear breast implants because they are the safest and most natural looking and feeling implants available.
What can a breast lift specialist do for me?
The breast lift procedure rejuvenates the breasts by trimming excess skin and tightening supporting tissues, achieving an uplifted, youthful shape. After a mastopexy, the breasts are higher on the chest and firmer to the touch. During the procedure, the areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple), which may have stretched or drooped, can be reduced in size and repositioned.
Keep in mind that a breast lift surgery will not significantly round out the upper part of your breast or alter the size. If you desire fuller breasts, Dr. Fiorillo suggests you consider a breast augmentation in addition to your breast lift surgery, and he is an expert on gummy bear breast implants procedures. If you want smaller breasts, consider a breast reduction in addition to your lift.
Am I a good candidate for a breast lift?
If you are finished having children or do not plan to have any children, then you are a likely candidate for this surgery, since pregnancy and nursing will stretch the skin and counter the effects of the surgery.
The best candidates are women who fit in one or more of these categories:
- Breast where skin and/or areola is stretched
- Breasts are misaligned
- Flat, elongated, or hanging breasts
- Misshapen breasts
- Nipples or areolas are located in the breast crease when the breast is not supported
- Nipples or areolas are pointing downward
- Sagging breasts
It is also very important that the patient:
- Is generally healthy
- Discusses realistic goals with their plastic surgeon
- Is a non-smoker
- Maintains a stable weight
How is a Breast Lift performed?
Mastopexies may be performed at any location where surgeries are performed; a hospital, an outpatient surgery center, or a surgeon’s office-based facility are typical. Usually the procedure takes 1 ½ to 3 ½ hours, on an outpatient basis, under general anesthesia or IV sedation.
Incision methods vary depending on the patient’s:
- Amount of excess skin
- Breast size and shape
- Degree of sagging
- Size and position of the areolas/nipples
- Skin quality
- Other factors
Dr Fiorillo chooses from the three most common incision types. The first is two rings around the areola in a doughnut shape. This is called a small-incision mastopexy, used mostly for patients with small breasts and minimal sagging. The second is an incision around the areola and down to the breast crease in a lollipop shape. And the final would be the lollipop shaped incision with an additional half-moon incision along the breast crease, which would be an anchor shape.
After the necessary incisions, Dr. Fiorillo lifts and reshapes the breast tissue into its new, rejuvenated contour, moving the nipple and areola higher on the breast and removing extra skin if the areola is enlarged. Then, he trims the excess breast skin that is caused by poor elasticity, stitching layers deep throughout the breast tissue to support the lifted breast.
Upon completion, the skin is closed with stitches, tissue adhesive, and/or surgical tape. Some incisions are hidden, and some are visible. In time, all the scars will become nearly invisible.

What is the recovery from a breast lift like?
When the surgery is completed, the breasts are wrapped in gauze dressings. You might need to wear a special elastic bandage or surgical bra, which will be replaced by a soft support bra after a few days. This will be worn 24 hours a day for about a month.
After a few days, the bruising, swelling, and discomfort from the surgery will pass. Any numbness will lessen as the swelling decreases. Stitches are removed in one to two weeks, and many patients return to work at that time.
What are the possible risks of a breast lift?
There are always risks involved in any surgery; therefore, it is very important to discuss this decision with Dr. Fiorillo, who is an expert in this field. The potential risks are unfavorable scarring, infection, poor healing of incisions, and changes in nipple and breast sensation. Dr. Fiorillo will give you pre-op and post-op instructions, which will help minimize or prevent any of these risks. The decision to do this surgery is very personal, and you will have to decide, with Dr. Fiorillo’s help, if this will achieve your particular goals.
Dr. Fiorillo is a breast lift expert and has an above-average track record of success. He will explain the risks and complications with you so you can make an educated decision based on all the facts.
