What Is Rhinoplasty?

BOOST YOUR SELF-ESTEEM WITH RESHAPING BY EXPERT PLASTIC SURGEON IN PEARL RIVER, NY AND ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ

Informally known as a “nose job”, Rhinoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed today. It is a procedure that reshapes, reduces or augments a person’s nose in order to help it to appear to “fit” the face, boosting self-esteem and confidence. Heredity usually plays a big role in the shape of your nose, but rhinoplasty can also correct the results of an injury like a broken nose or a birth defect.

Other than common plastic surgery for aesthetic purposes, rhinoplasty is also performed for functional reasons, such as septoplasty or endoscopic sinus surgery. These can treat breathing problems, such as those that are caused by deviated septum or obstructions to the nasal passages. Many people who require a functional Rhinoplasty in Pearl River will also choose to have cosmetic changes made at the same time.

Beautiful
& Natural Results

Furthermore, rhinoplasty may help improve breathing function in many patients who suffer from problems such as difficulty breathing through the nose due to a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or a history of a broken nose. Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Ingargiola has been trained in performing cosmetic facial and nose surgeries, taking a conservative approach to creating beautiful and natural results.

Although Rhinoplasty often consists of millimeter-level changes to the nose, results can be beautiful and dramatic. This procedure at Reflections Medical by Dr. Michael Fiorillo is recommended to make a wide nose look smaller in size, correct the appearance of a droopy or bulbous tip, remove a nasal hump, and/or improve your breathing. The objective is to allow for a more aesthetically pleasing nose that meets your unique and individualized goals while also allowing an improvement in function.

How is the procedure performed?

At our office in Pearl River Rhinoplasty is performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia, on an outpatient basis. This procedure usually takes about one to two hours. Dr. Ingargiola will use one of two techniques. During a closed rhinoplasty procedure, incisions are made within the nostrils. Open rhinoplasty requires the incision to be made across the columella (the skin area between the nostrils).

In both methods, the soft tissues that cover the nose are gently lifted. Dr. Ingargiola sculpts the bone and cartilage into the desired shape. Any additional cartilage needed for augmentation can often be taken from the septum. If the septum is deviated, Dr. Ingargiola will make that adjustment and correct the inner structures to improve breathing. The tissues are re-shaped and then sutured closed. If the patient would like nostril reshaping that will be done during the final steps of rhinoplasty.

What is the recovery from nose surgery like?

Patients may experience some swelling and bruising, puffiness, nose ache or dull headache, bleeding or stuffiness for a short time after the surgery. Most feel much better within two days and can return to work in approximately one week. Rhinoplasty results show gradually, as days pass and swelling recedes. Swelling may appear from time to time during the first year after the procedure, more noticeable in the morning and then decreases during the day. Patients can wear contact lenses immediately. However, glasses may need to be propped on your cheeks or taped to your forehead to avoid any weight on the nose for up to seven weeks.

What are the possible risks of rhinoplasty?

Complications, when they do occur, are minor and rare. There may be nosebleeds, which are usually a reaction to anesthesia or infection.

What is revision rhinoplasty?

Secondary or revision rhinoplasty can correct deformities caused by previous nose procedures. It is more challenging due to the fact that there is less cartilage to utilize if enhancement is necessary and there may be tissue tightening and scarring. However, a skilled plastic surgeon, like Dr. Ingargiola can improve the function and the appearance of the nose.
