The field of plastic surgery is often subjected to gossip, and there are individuals who are not supportive of cosmetically altering the human body. As a result, it is sometimes the more controversial stories from the industry that make news headlines. It is important that individuals recognize the positive attributes that plastic surgery brings to this world.

In order to give back, US plastic surgeons travelled to Rwanda to help those suffering from physical deformities. Genetic conditions like cleft lips, cleft palate, and keloids are common in the area. In order to help boost the confidence of individuals suffering from these conditions, plastic surgeons provided reconstructive services. They also treated cysts and burns to provide further confidence to those self-conscious about their looks.

This mission was part of the Medical and Technical Support Programme of the health initiative in Africa. This program has international doctors coming in on a regular basis to perform various types of medicine. The program ensures that people that would not otherwise have access to certain medical services receive the help they require.
