Planning for Pain Management After Plastic Surgery

Posted January 07, 2011 in Plastic Surgery Tips

As you recover from plastic surgery, there is the potential to experience some pain regardless of the type of procedure you're had. During most procedures, you will be put under a general anesthesia to ensure that you don't feel a thing. But once you go home and are away from the care of doctors and nurses, you will need to ensure that your pain is effectively managed so here are some tips to make sure it is!

1. Ask about the medications you'll be taking during the consultation – the day you have cosmetic surgery may become a bit of a blur, so you can discuss the options and the schedule you'll need to take your medications in advance as well. The day of your surgery, the family member or friend helping to take you home after your procedure can always double check the information with a doctor or nurse if they plan to help you.

2. Talk to your doctor about your history of medications – it's important for your plastic surgeon to understand any allergies, but also how effective you've found pain medication in the past if you've used it. If you've had severe side effects from specific medications, the doctor may be able to prescribe something different.

3. Once home, plan ahead with your medications – it's beneficial to take your medications on a schedule to prevent pain from being experienced at all, but you may also want to plan this schedule around the times you're likely to be up or doing something that might increase the pain.
