Breast Implant Database Formed By American Society For Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Posted March 08, 2022 in Plastic Surgery News, by Dr. Fiorillo

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has announced that they will be in support of a new national registry that is to be compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The registry will contain data regarding breast implant procedures and will document reported cases of Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, which is a very rare condition.

The members of the ASAPS are applauding the Food and Drug Administration for being in collaboration with the ASPS in the collecting of data. The goal is to ensure that all scientific practices are the basis for research and information. This is to include post market surveillance.

Over the past 25 years, there have been few reported cases of ALCL. To date, there have only been 34 cases identified out of about 10 million women who have had breast implants. The condition can appear in the scar tissue that forms around the implant following surgery. When the condition occurs, patients have responded well to different forms of treatment, including the removal of the implant and the surrounding scar tissue.

ASAPS is joining the FDA and ASPS in stating that breast implants are safe. This procedure is one of the most studied in medical history. Physicians have a commitment to providing safe and effective care to all patients and share the commitment of the ASPS and FDA in evaluating and monitoring devices.

All women who have had breast implants should continue to follow their regular routine regarding medical care. These women should also perform self examinations on a regular basis. Changes in the breast, such as swelling and pain should be reported to a physician. For further information regarding the safety of breast implants, go here.

Any reputable plastic surgery practice is focused on patient safety at all times, so this is just one way to give the public more knowledge about how the industry is advocating for them.
