You’ve lost the weight. You’re feeling good. But, you’re not happy with what the weight loss left behind. Perhaps it’s excess skin, sagging breasts or simply a case of exercise-resistant fat. Whatever the issue, take a moment to consider this: What’s the next step?
If you think cosmetic surgery might be right for you, take a look at these popular plastic surgeries after weight loss:
Breast Lift: Like other parts of the body, the breasts can sag following weight loss. Breast Lift Surgery aims to correct this. During the procedure, we will trim excess skin and tighten supporting tissues to achieve an uplifted, youthful contour. A breast lift is also a common component of a “mommy makeover.”
Body Lift: In cases of extreme weight loss, Body Lift Surgery is a common cosmetic solution. The goal is to remove excess skin from the torso and upper legs. During the procedure, the skin is lifted, muscles are tightened and fat is removed where necessary. Although this is an extensive procedure, many patients find it well worth their while.
Liposuction: While diet and exercise might be enough for some, others find that they are suffering from persistent, exercise-resistant fat. In these cases, liposuction can often be the best option. The procedure uses a special suction tool to permanently remove fat from the abdomen, thighs and many other sites on the body. Following weight loss, liposuction can be that little boost to help achieve your cosmetic results.

As the number-one cosmetic treatment in the US, BOTOX® is the wrinkle treatment of choice for millions of Americans every year. We all know it can change the way we look, but could it also change the way we feel? The way we think about ourselves?
News Agency, UPI, reports on one plastic surgeon, Steven Dayan, who sought to find that out. In a recent study, “participants were photographed and randomized to receive injections of Botox between the eyebrows, forehead and crow’s feet or injections of a saline solution,” reports UPI. The study wanted to look at the ways that botulinum toxin type A treatments can affect self esteem and quality of life. And, the results may surprise you.
According to UPI, “[The] double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study found Botox boosts overall quality of life and self-esteem, U.S. researchers say.” And, while this doesn’t mean to say that you’ll have the same outcome, it definitely raises an interesting question about how cosmetic treatment may impact our lives in deeper ways than previously considered.
Now, read on to learn more about BOTOX and what it can do for you.
10 Years of Botox
Last month, BOTOX celebrated a milestone birthday. “April 15th marked the 10-year anniversary of the approval of Botox Cosmetic by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” says the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. And, in those ten years, millions and millions of Americans have undergone the procedure.
Why? The answer is simple — because it works. BOTOX injections work by preventing facial creases such as “frown lines.” Unlike fillers which work to “fill in” creases, BOTOX is essentially a muscle relaxer that reduces their appearance. Think BOTOX might be right for you? Schedule a consultation today!

Let’s face it — your skin is the part of you that the whole world sees. As the body’s largest, most visible organ, your skin can certainly say a lot about you. Is yours saying the right thing?
As a plastic surgeon, I can tell you firsthand that some of the top cosmetic concerns among patients are pertaining to their skin. Thankfully, modern medicine offers a myriad of treatments — both surgical and nonsurgical — that can combat even the most pressing skin concern. Want to find out what other patients are doing about it?
Here is our list of the Top Skin Issues Among Patients:
Wrinkles on the face: Facial wrinkles are the most common cosmetic skin concern by far. Not only do they make us look old, but they can make us feel old. And, when it comes to wrinkle treatments, patients are looking for less-invasive options such as BOTOX® and fillers. BOTOX is essentially a muscle relaxer that works to prevent creases, while fillers like Restylane® “fill in” the spaces of creases.
Drooping skin around midsection: Whether you’ve lost a great deal of weight, had a child or are simply dealing with the effects of aging, sagging skin around the midsection can be a problem. Thankfully, a tummy tuck can often be the answer. Tummy Tuck Surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is a procedure aimed at flattening and shaping the abdomen and waist by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles.
“Turkey neck”: As we age, the skin can sag and droop, creating what has come to be known as a “turkey neck.” Often, Necklift Surgery can combat this by smoothing and tightening the skin on the neck. The goal is a toned, more youthful appearance.
Brown spots: Brown spots are one of the biggest red flags when it comes to premature aging. Usually due to years of sun exposure, brown spots can cause a great deal of grief. Often, however, we can treat the appearance of brown spots with microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion — also known as microderm — uses a stream of fine particles to exfoliate the skin and rejuvenate the appearance.

According to their website, RealSelf® “is a community dedicated to helping people make the right health & beauty choices.” One of the ways they do that is through asking members to vote on whether or not a cosmetic procedure was “Worth It.” That is, whether they are satisfied with their procedure, all things considered.
In fact, these “Worth It” ratings are becoming so popular that they were even featured in this year’s plastic surgery report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). As the ASAPS explains, “Worth It Ratings are expressed as a percentage, for example, an 80% Worth It Ratings means 8 out of 10 patients would do it again.”
Here are a few procedures that earned high “Worth It” ratings:
Tummy Tuck — 94% said “Worth It” Tummy Tuck Surgery — which is also known as abdominoplasty — is a surgery used to flatten the waist and abdomen. During the procedure, we remove excess fat and skin and tighten the underlying muscles.
Mommy Makeover — 98% said “Worth It”
A Mommy Makeover is a series of post-maternity procedures aimed at restoring a woman’s “pre-baby body.” Common Mommy Makeover procedures include Breast Lift Surgery, Tummy Tuck Surgery and/or Liposuction.
Breast Augmentation — 92% said “Worth It”
For women with a small or disproportionate chest, Beast Augmentation Surgery can often be the answer. Using a silicone or saline implant, we can increase the size and fullness of the bustline.
Breast Reduction — 94% said “Worth It”
Women with exceptionally large breasts will often complain of back pain, breathing problems and poor posture. Thankfully, Breast Reduction Surgery can often be of help. This procedure removes fat and glandular tissue from the breast while tightening skin to achieve a smaller, more proportionate bustline.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the world’s largest plastic surgery specialty organization, recently released a powerful public service announcement, highlighting the dangers of “white coat deception.” What is white coat deception? Essentially, it is the practice of physicians offering plastic surgery procedures without board certification. Press “play” below to watch the 30-second PSA.
ABC News also reports on this recent phenomenon, explaining that, “In 48 states it is currently legal in the United States for doctors who are not certified by the board of plastic surgeons to practice cosmetic and plastic surgery.” Concerned? So are we.
“After going into surgery for a simple repair of her breast implants, Dinora Rodriguez …awoke from the procedure to find that her plastic surgeon had left her with conjoined breasts…” reports ABC. Ms. Rodriguez, who is 40 years old, explained that her biggest mistake was not checking her doctor’s credentials. And, according to the report, “Without her knowledge or permission, the surgeon had also nip/tucked her eyelids….” So, how could this have happened?
While Ms. Rodriguez’s doctor was supposedly licensed to practice plastic surgery in California, she was not “board certified” by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Read on to find out why board certification matters.
Choosing a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
What does it mean to be “board certified?” The American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes only one certifying body for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For someone to call themselves a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, he or she must be officially recognized by this organization. These doctors stand out because they have demonstrated experience and knowledge and experience above and beyond regular medical training.
So, when it comes to choosing a plastic surgeon, always make sure you’re dealing with someone who’s board certified. If you have any doubts, ask to see credentials. It’s your right!

It doesn’t matter who you are. Every woman, at some point, has been bugged by one cosmetic concern or another. And, it doesn’t matter how old you are. These little beauty annoyances can happen at any age. As a plastic surgeon, I can tell you firsthand that so many women share the exact same issues and challenges.
So, to show you that you’re not alone, here is our list of the top 5 cosmetic concerns among women and a few ways that plastic surgery can help.
My wrinkles make me look old. Wrinkles are often the number one concern among women by far. Not only can they make us look old, but they can make us feel old as well. Thankfully, cosmetic treatment has a long tradition of combating the appearance of wrinkles. The most popular way to address facial creases is definitely with injections like BOTOX ® and fillers like Restylane®. BOTOX, is essentially a muscle relaxer that works to prevent creases. Fillers “fill in” creases and add volume to the face.
My eyes look tired. Our eyes can say a lot about us. What are yours saying about you? If drooping and sagging eyelids are aging you prematurely, a procedure called Blepharoplasty can often be the solution. Blepharoplasty—also knows as an eyelid lift—is a procedure where we remove excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. The result is a fresher, more rejuvenated appearance.
My lips are thin and flat. In our society, full, beautiful lips are associated with health, beauty and youth. As we age, the lips can naturally become thin and lose shape. When that happens, many patients choose a lip enhancement procedure—either surgical or non-surgical. The most popular filler for lip enhancement is Restylane®, which can plump the lips temporarily. For a more permanent option, other women choose lip implants.
My skin has seen better days. Our skin is the part of us the whole world sees. Unfortunately, that also means it takes the most beatings. Thankfully, there are a host of cosmetic treatments available to freshen up the skin. One of the oldest and most effective is a chemical peel. During the procedure, we remove the damaged outer layers of skin to smooth texture, reduce scarring and much more.
I can’t get rid of stubborn fat. While diet and exercise may be enough for some women, for others that’s simply not the case. For those with stubborn, exercise-resistant fat, liposuction is often a great option. During the procedure, fat can be permanently removed from the thighs, midsection and many other parts of the body.

Many patients have heard of Restylane® and Perlane® before, but not everyone knows the whole story. Now, while you may think all injectables are the same, think again! There are actually two completely different categories of injectables out there. The first category is made up of Botulinum Toxin Type A injections. This group includes treatments like BOTOX® and Dysport®, essentially muscle relaxers that prevent intermittent creases like frown lines. The second category is comprised of soft tissue fillers that essentially “fill in” creases and add volume to the face. Restylane® and Perlane® fall into that second category–and, they’re the world’s most popular and most studied cosmetic dermal fillers.
Restylane is a biodegradable gel targeted at smoothing out wrinkles in the skin. It is primarily composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that is naturally found in the body. In addition, Restylane attracts water molecules to the site of injection, further enhancing its effectiveness.
What’s the difference between Restylane® and Perlane®?
Simply put, not a whole lot. The main difference between Restylane and Perlane is the average particle size as well as the depth of the injection. In general, the Perlane particles are a bit bigger than Restylane particles, and are more appropriate for deeper injections. When it comes to results, both Restylane and Perlane can add fullness and volume to the face, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and rejuvenating your appearance.
Thankfully, you don’t have to choose between Restylane and Perlane. When you come in for your consultation, we can assess your cosmetic needs and let you know which filler is right for you.

If folks take anything away from this appearance, I hope it’s this: Never take plastic surgery lightly, always do your homework and take time in choosing your plastic surgeon. Be your own advocate!
Now read on for a few tips on how to find a plastic surgeon who’s right for you.
Choosing a Plastic Surgeon
Here are a few of our top tips for choosing a plastic surgeon:
Check for board certification. First and foremost, make sure you’re dealing with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. This means they have demonstrated knowledge and experience above and beyond regular medical school, and they have been officially recognized by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Ask to see their work. Plastic Surgery Before and After Photos can give you a good sense of a surgeon’s past work. While they can never be a guarantee of what your results will look like, they can increase your basic understanding of a procedure.
Ask questions. During your Plastic Surgery Consultation, ask the important questions, such as: What kind of risks are there? Is the surgery center well-equipped? What is the aftercare going to be like? How happy are patients who undergo this procedure?
Make sure they’re giving you realistic expectations. Keeping your plastic surgery goals realistic and specific is vitally important to patient satisfaction and happiness following a procedure. Be cautious if someone is promising you results that seem too good to be true. As with most things, when it seems too good to be true, it often is.

According to the most recent data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the number of cosmetic procedures performed in the US is on the rise for another year in a row. So, which procedure saw the most growth? The answer may surprise you. “Chin augmentation grew more than breast augmentation, Botox® and liposuction combined in 2011,” explains a recent ASPS press release. “The procedure skyrocketed in both women and men, as well as in all patients over the age of 20, with the largest increase seen in patients age 40 or older.”
According to the ASPS, the number of chin augmentation surgeries were divided almost equally among men and women, with men receiving 10,593 procedures and women receiving 10,087. All in all, the procedure saw a startling 71% increase in popularity between 2010 and 2011. So, why was there such a dramatic boom? According to the ASPS, this phenomenon “ appears, in part, to be sparked by increased usage of video chat technology, an aging baby boomer population and a desire for success in the workplace.”

Chin Implant Procedure
Patients looking to achieve a stronger, better-proportioned chin sometimes turn to dermal fillers to achieve their desired look. While this may enhance one’s appearance, the results are only temporary. Now, many patients looking for a more permanent solution are turning to Chin Implant Surgery.
During the chin augmentation procedure, a bio-compatible implant made of silicone or another flexible material is inserted into the chin through a small incision. The implant may be placed into a pocket or secured to the bone with screws for long-lasting results. This procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to perform, with patients usually able to return to work the next day. For many patients, this procedure means the difference between the chin they have and the chin they have always wanted. Interested? Schedule a consultation today!
