Everything you need to know about lip enhancement

Friday, April 26th, 2013

It’s not fair; Angelina Jolie has the most stunning lips. If you’ve ever thought this, the chances are that you’re not similarly blessed. But fear not, lip enhancement surgery could be the answer! Here’s your need to know guide if you’re considering lip enhancement cosmetic surgery in NJ.

A range of options

There are a variety of options to choose from if you’re looking to plump up your lips, and here are some of the more commonly used options:

  • Restylane or HylaForm injections
  • Collagen injections
  • Injecting fat from another area of your body
  • Dermalogen or Fascia injections (using donor material)
  • Autologen injections (this uses your own collagen from another area of your body)
  • Artecoll injections (using synthetic material)

Whichever option you choose, your surgeon will offer you a consultation, where you can sit and chat about the benefits of each option.

Will it hurt?

Your appointment will normally take less than an hour, and if you’ve opted for an injection you’ll receive topical anesthetic (for implants you’ll be given general or local anesthetic). Injecting filler into your lips takes just a few minutes, and it will be mildly painful. Afterwards, you’ll experience swelling and mild discomfort for a few days.

How will I feel afterwards?

After the procedure, it might look as if your lips are too big – some lip enhancement materials will lose volume quickly, so don’t worry, your lips will soon look more normal and beautiful! Swelling should subside within a few days and you can normally return to work after a couple of days – the perfect excuse to show off your new pout.

By choosing a reliable cosmetic surgeon for your lip enhancement, risks will be minimized and you can rest safe in the knowledge that you’ll soon be giving Angelina a run for her money!

Do “Liquid Facelifts” Really Work?

Friday, July 27th, 2012

Liquid facelifts – it’s the newest buzzword in the world of plastic surgery.  The subject of countless magazine articles and websites, what’s the real story behind this new procedure?

It’s important to first point out that a “liquid facelift” isn’t really a facelift at all – at least not in the traditional sense.  Unlike its surgical counterpart, a liquid facelift requires no cutting and is considered minimally invasive.  It relies on a combination of BOTOX® and fillers to smooth out lines, add volume to the face and achieve a fresher, more youthful appearance.

Popular “liquid facelift” injections include:

  • BOTOX®: Essentially a muscle relaxer, BOTOX is particularly well-suited for creases such as crow’s feet and horizontal lines across the forehead.
  • Restylane®: A popular hyaluronic acid filler, Restylane works to fill in deep creases, add volume to the face and achieve a more youthful face shape.
  • Juvéderm®: The first FDA-approved dermal filler proven safe and effective for persons of color, Juvéderm works to smooth wrinkles and add volume to the skin of the face.

Of course, it’s important to understand that injectables have their limitations.  The only way to achieve dramatic facelift results is with an actual facelift procedure.  Read on to learn more.

Facelift in NY

As we age, the effects of time, gravity, sun exposure and stress inevitably take their toll on our faces, producing wrinkles, folds, fat deposits and loose skin. Facelift surgery aims to correct this.

Typically performed under local anesthesia combined with a sedative, a facelift is one of the most effective ways to rejuvenate the face and “shed a few years.”  During the procedure, underlying facial muscles are tightened and the skin is redraped around the neck and face.  Aimed at achieving a fresher, more youthful appearance, a facelift can mean all the difference when it comes to delaying the signs of aging.

BOTOX® Turns 10 | The Decade that Changed It All

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Years ago, when a patient wanted to treat facial wrinkles, their only real option was surgery.  Then, in 2002, everything changed.  When BOTOX® Cosmetic was first FDA approved, the concept of minimally-invasive procedures was little known.  Today, it represents the number-one category in cosmetic treatment across the board.  Why?  Because it works.  Instead of having to go under the knife, folks were now able to achieve dramatic age-defying results with less downtime and no need for general anesthesia.  What started as a simple alternative to surgical wrinkle treatments has grown to become the most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States.

So, how many BOTOX procedures are performed each year?  BOTOX falls under the category of “botulinum toxin type A” procedures.  (Dysport® also falls in this category.)  According to the most recent data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were 5.6 million botulinum toxin type A procedures performed in 2011, alone.  That represents a full 5% growth from the previous year.  And, while procedures like facelift surgery continue to be highly effective and grow in popularity as well, procedures like BOTOX have well-established themselves as the industry leader in wrinkle treatment.

What’s number two?  Soft tissue fillers.  Read on to learn more.

BOTOX vs. Dermal Fillers

So, what’s the difference between BOTOX Injections and soft tissue fillers?  BOTOX is essentially a muscle relaxer.  This highly purified protein works to prevent dynamic creases from forming.  These include frown lines, crow’s feet, etc.

Fillers – as the name suggests – work to “fill in” facial creases.  Because of this, they are well-suited even for deeper, more persistent lines.  Popular fillers include Restylane®, Perlane® and JUVÉDERM®.

Can’t decide between BOTOX and a filler?  You don’t have to!  Contact us today and schedule a consultation.

BOTOX® Boosts Self Esteem, Says Study

Friday, May 11th, 2012

As the number-one cosmetic treatment in the US, BOTOX® is the wrinkle treatment of choice for millions of Americans every year.  We all know it can change the way we look, but could it also change the way we feel? The way we think about ourselves?

News Agency, UPI, reports on one plastic surgeon, Steven Dayan, who sought to find that out.  In a recent study, “participants were photographed and randomized to receive injections of Botox between the eyebrows, forehead and crow’s feet or injections of a saline solution,” reports UPI. The study wanted to look at the ways that botulinum toxin type A treatments can affect self esteem and quality of life.  And, the results may surprise you.

According to UPI, “[The] double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study found Botox boosts overall quality of life and self-esteem, U.S. researchers say.”  And, while this doesn’t mean to say that you’ll have the same outcome, it definitely raises an interesting question about how cosmetic treatment may impact our lives in deeper ways than previously considered.

Now, read on to learn more about BOTOX and what it can do for you.

10 Years of Botox

Last month, BOTOX celebrated a milestone birthday.  “April 15th marked the 10-year anniversary of the approval of Botox Cosmetic by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” says the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  And, in those ten years, millions and millions of Americans have undergone the procedure.

Why?  The answer is simple — because it works.  BOTOX injections work by preventing facial creases such as “frown lines.”  Unlike fillers which work to “fill in” creases, BOTOX is essentially a muscle relaxer that reduces their appearance.  Think BOTOX might be right for you?  Schedule a consultation today!

What Can Restylane® and Perlane® Do For Me?

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Many patients have heard of Restylane® and Perlane® before, but not everyone knows the whole story.  Now, while you may think all injectables are the same, think again!  There are actually two completely different categories of injectables out there.  The first category is made up of Botulinum Toxin Type A injections.  This group includes treatments like BOTOX® and Dysport®, essentially muscle relaxers that prevent intermittent creases like frown lines.  The second category is comprised of soft tissue fillers that essentially “fill in” creases and add volume to the face.  Restylane® and Perlane® fall into that second category–and, they’re the world’s most popular and most studied cosmetic dermal fillers.

Restylane is a biodegradable gel targeted at smoothing out wrinkles in the skin. It is primarily composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that is naturally found in the body. In addition, Restylane attracts water molecules to the site of injection, further enhancing its effectiveness.

What’s the difference between Restylane® and Perlane®?

Simply put, not a whole lot.  The main difference between Restylane and Perlane is the average particle size as well as the depth of the injection.  In general, the Perlane particles are a bit bigger than Restylane particles, and are more appropriate for deeper injections.  When it comes to results, both Restylane and Perlane can add fullness and volume to the face, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and rejuvenating your appearance.

Thankfully, you don’t have to choose between Restylane and Perlane.  When you come in for your consultation, we can assess your cosmetic needs and let you know which filler is right for you.

Allure Magazine Answers FAQs of BOTOX®

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

By now, we’ve all heard of BOTOX®, the powerful wrinkle treatment and the number one cosmetic procedure in the US.  While we all know that BOTOX can work to prevent wrinkles, many patients still have questions.  Beauty magazine, Allure, recently published some of the frequently asked questions about this cutting-edge treatment.  Read on to learn more about what to expect from BOTOX Injections.

BOTOX Questions and Answers

BOTOX, for those that aren’t sure, is part of a category of cosmetic treatments called Botulinum Toxin Type A.  Essentially, these types of treatments act as muscle relaxers that prevent facial creases.  While that part is clear to most people, there are still questions left to be answered.

Here are a few questions borrowed from the Allure article along with our thoughts on the matter:

  • “Will BOTOX make me feel numb or look frozen?” One of the biggest concerns with BOTOX is patients wanting a natural look.  When administered correctly and conservatively, we can often achieve not only a rejuvenating look, but a natural look as well.  And, since BOTOX should not affect the nerves that cause sensation, patients worried about facial numbness can breathe a little easier.
  • “Does BOTOX hurt?” As with any injection, BOTOX can be somewhat uncomfortable.  Compared to dermal fillers, BOTOX uses a smaller needle, and many patients are surprised how little discomfort they experience from the procedure.  We can also offer topical anesthetics to numb the area before treatment.
  • “What is the ideal age to start using BOTOX?” There’s no simple answer to this question.  To quote Allure, “You don’t need it before you have wrinkles to hide.”  BOTOX is a procedure aimed at making you look younger; many patients don’t ask for BOTOX before their late 30s and 40s.
  • “How long does BOTOX last?” As with any cosmetic procedure, individual results will vary.  In general, however, the effects of BOTOX can often last up to four months.  Though  not a permanent solution, BOTOX can often rejuvenate the face and take year’s off the appearance.

Putting Your Best Face Forward this Spring

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Looking outside today, spring is most definitely in the air.  We all know spring is a season of new beginnings–have you considered giving your face a fresh new start?  Spring is the time we’re getting out, hitting the streets and enjoying the warmer weather.  It’s also the time of year everyone sees us more.  Think about putting your best face forward with a few minimally-invasive procedures for freshening up and looking your best.

Top Springtime Cosmetic Procedures

The spring season is certainly upon us—look your best!  Here are the top springtime procedures to help you freshen up:

  • Laser skin resurfacing: If you’re looking to keep your face “springy’ this season, consider Laser Skin Resurfacing.  As we age, the natural collagen in our face begins to diminish and skin may sag and droop. Laser treatments can rejuvenate the skin, combating wrinkles, sun damage, crow’s feet and other signs of the aging process.
  • BOTOX®/Dysport®: BOTOX and Dysport Injections represent the largest category of cosmetic treatments throughout the US.  These Botulinum Toxin Type A procedures are fantastic “quick fixes” to get ready for warmer weather.  These injectables are essentially muscle relaxers that work to prevent intermittent creases from forming in the skin.  While they’re not permanent solutions, the results of BOTOX and Dysport can often last up to several months.
  • HydraFacial™: HydraFacial is the cutting-edge “hydradermabrasion” procedure.  You can think of this MediSpa procedure as a moisture-rich version of traditional microdermabrasion.  Instead of using tiny rough particles, HydraFacial drenches the skin in serums, and exfoliates with its special spiral tip.  It’s a simple procedure with big results!

Freshen Up this Season

How You Sleep Affects How You Look

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

We all know that adequate sleep is good for our overall health, but did you ever consider how sleep position can affect your appearance?  CBS affiliate, WCCO, reports on the way that sleep position can contribute to facial wrinkles, leaving many people to ask, “Am I doing enough for my skin during the night?”  The station enlisted the expertise of an area dermatologist.  When asked if sleep position can cause wrinkles, he responded, “It absolutely can (cause wrinkles) over time… If you fold a piece of paper enough times you get an etched crease there.”

Gender plays a role, too.  “Men tend to sleep on their stomachs and they tend to get wrinkles on [their] foreheads,” reports WCCO. “Women tend to be side-sleepers and they get more wrinkles on their cheeks.”  When it comes to wrinkle prevention during the night, the doctor suggested that sleeping on your back or varying sleep positions were probably the best bet.  Of course, sleep position isn’t the only thing that contributes to wrinkles.  Read on to learn a few ways modern medicine deals with combating creases.

Cosmetic Wrinkle Treatments

Board Certified Plastic Surgeons have a long tradition of helping patients improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Although a natural part of the aging process, facial creases can make you look old, tired and ultimately, harm your self esteem.

Here are a few of the ways we treat wrinkles today:

  • BOTOX®: BOTOX is essentially a muscle relaxer that works to prevent facial wrinkles and achieve a fresher, more youthful appearance.  This treatment works best for lines that are intermittent, such as “frown lines.”  For creases that are deeper and always visible, dermal fillers are often a better bet
  • Fillers: Dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® work by filling in the “valleys” of creases.  Some soft tissue fillers can also restore the face to a more youthful shape.
  • Chemical peels: One of the best ways to “wake up” and rejuvenate the face is with a Chemical Peel.  Beyond reducing the appearance of wrinkles, peels can often improve skin tone and texture.

Top 5 Minimally-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Along with their data on the top surgical procedures in the US, the American Society for Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) released its report on the top 5 minimally-invasive procedures in 2011.  With over 12 million minimally-invasive procedures performed in 2011, here are the most popular procedures based on this year’s ASPS data.

Top 5 Minimally-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures:

  1. Botulinum toxin type A: Botulinum toxin type A is a category of injectables that includes BOTOX® and Dysport®.  In essence, BOTOX is a muscle relaxer that prevents facial creases such as “frown lines.”
  2. Soft tissue fillers: The category of dermal fillers includes JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®.  These treatments aim to combat deep wrinkles by filling in the “valleys” of creases.
  3. Chemical peel: 1,110,464 Chemical Peel procedures were performed in 2011.  This treatment works by removing the damaged outer layers of the skin to achieve a fresher, more youthful appearance.
  4. Laser hair removal: Laser Hair Removal aims to produce permanent hair reduction.  This is often accomplished through a series of in-office laser treatments.
  5. Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion—or, Microderm—is a procedure used to smooth the texture of the skin, soften fine lines and more.  During treatment, a gentle stream of fine particles is used to exfoliate the outer layer of skin.

The Growing Demand for Less-Invasive Treatment

In today’s world of cosmetic treatment, minimally-invasive procedures are on the rise.  According to the most recent ASPS data, between 2010 and 2011, minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures saw a full 6% jump in popularity in one year alone.  So, why are more patients seeking out non-surgical options?  The answer is simple.  First and foremost, patients are looking for less downtime and a more natural look.  Instead of going under for lengthy surgical procedures, countless patients are choosing this relatively new category of natural “quicker fix” treatments.  What we’re seeing is a lot of injectables such as BOTOX as well as many patients choosing Laser Treatments.

James Bond Star Says He May Need BOTOX® Soon

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

English actor, Daniel Craig, was recently quoted on the possibility that he may need Botox in the near future.  Craig, who starred in the two most recent James Bond films, also lends his ability to the 2011 film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  Now at the center of two film series, the actor had something to say about the potential for cosmetic treatment.  According to the Press Association, when he was “Asked about the prospect of carrying two franchises, Daniel joked: ‘I’m going to be very old. Botox is going to be in there!’”

The Growing Trend of “Bro-Tox”

Craig’s recent openness says a lot about the way men’s attitudes toward plastic surgery have changed in recent years.  Procedures that were once only popular among women are now performed on thousands of men every year.  One of these treatments is BOTOX®.  BOTOX—often referred to as “Bro-Tox” among male patients—is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in America according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).  The organization reports that nearly 337,000 Botulinum Toxin Type A (ie., BOTOX® and Dysport®) procedures were performed on men in 2010.

For those with creases that appear intermittently, such as while smiling or squinting, BOTOX is often the answer.  BOTOX is essentially a muscle relaxer intended to prevent creases for an overall more youthful and fresh appearance.  Of course, with this new interest from men comes new considerations.  Male patients want to enhance their appearance without compromising their natural, masculine looks.  We can work together to establish your cosmetic goals and find the best treatment options suited to your needs and concerns.
