There has been some hype (and controversy) recently about the idea of using adjustable implants that allow individuals to change the size of their breasts after plastic surgery. The idea is to allow women to change their minds with regards to size 3 to 6 months after their initial breast enhancement procedure. The technology is similar to what is used on a temporary basis on women who have mastectomies.
The idea behind this is that so many individuals get conservative- sized implants only to determine after that they would have liked larger ones. Swapping out the implants for a bigger size then means another invasive surgical procedure. In order to increase the size of the implants, there is a tiny port inserted under the skin. This allows a surgeon to use a needle to insert more saline or remove some.
The procedure is controversial due the potential risks of leaving ports in for 6 months then removing them. However, there are some in the industry that also argue that it leaves patients with a greater level of satisfaction.
What do you think about the idea of adjustable implants?

It’s often been assumed in mainstream media that actress Gwyneth Paltrow would fall into the anti-plastic surgery camp. This is because she has been a major advocate of a healthy lifestyle and has focused heavily upon nutrition and exercise to extreme levels. This was an incorrect assumption as Gwenyth has stated, on the record, that she would consider plastic surgery.
Gwyneth does not appear to be an advocate of plastic surgery strictly for vanity – but she supports it and would consider it when it serves a practical function. The actress admits that she never before considered plastic surgery, until she finished breast feeding. Now she says that she would consider having her breasts done.
This is a very common trend in plastic surgery today – there are many women that choose mommy makeovers after they’ve had a child.
Gwyneth Paltrow has not yet admitted to following through with a breast enhancement, but you can. A breast enhancement, breast lift, tummy tuck and liposuction are common components of a mommy makeover that you may consider. Contact us to learn more.

Although the Food and Drug Administration has begun an investigation linking breast cancer and breast implants, it cannot be concluded that the two are related. Though there are rare cases relating breast cancer to silicone implants, one cannot conclude that all breast implants will cause cancer.
A new form of cancer called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma has been getting a lot of bad media press due to its relation with implants. Cancer is so complex, and can be caused by many different factors, including genetics, environment, and lifestyle. Studies are inconclusive and cannot prove without a doubt that cancer is linked to silicone breast implants.
Times are changing and technology is getting smarter. People are becoming more aware of the risks and dangers of the actions they take on a daily basis. You hear it all over the news – millions of different things are causing cancer as more and more studies are being conducted. Red dyes used in different foods are cancerous. Staying out in the sun too long causes cancer. Talking on a mobile phone will eventually cause cancer. Radiation from your microwave will cause cancer. Whether it’s the food that we eat, our genetics, or repercussions of our daily activities, cancer is an ever-changing and growing disease that cannot be blamed on just one specific aspect.
Although there is a rare cancer link that is related to saline or silicone based breast implants, doctors are aware of its risks but continue to do surgeries because they are safe. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery claims that breast implants are not a health hazard. Millions of people have breast implant surgery, making this an $800 million dollar business every year. It cannot be concluded that everyone that has chosen to get implants will get cancer. And if there are cases related to cancer and implants, it is usually cured by removing the implants and undergoing chemotherapy and or radiation for a short period of time. It is also claimed that ALCL cancer is more moderate than regular breast cancer with no implants.
According to the National Institute for Health, fewer than five percent of women under 40 will get breast cancer. Although breast cancer is a growing concern for millions of women worldwide, it cannot be said that if one chooses to undergo breast augmentation, they will be guaranteed to get cancer someday. Breast augmentation is a personal choice. Millions of women have the surgery every year without problems, and are generally satisfied with the results both aesthetically and health-wise.

Revision Breast Augmentation Procedures Allow Women to Achieve the True Results They Desire
With more and more women undergoing breast augmentation each year, many choose their surgeon based on affordability rather than experience and training, and are left unsatisfied with the results of their procedure.
New York, NY – November 22, 2010 – Revision breast augmentation can successfully modify the appearance of the breasts for patients who are unhappy with the results of their original breast augmentation procedure. The most effective outcomes are achieved by plastic surgeons who have specialized training in breast surgery and are equipped to perform a safe, efficient and personalized procedure.
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Fiorillo offers patients revision breast augmentation surgery at his New York City practice to alter the size, shape or placement of the implant, or to correct complications or abnormalities that developed after the initial procedure. Some women also experience changes in the appearance of the breasts after pregnancy, weight loss or other lifestyle changes. Revision breast augmentation is often performed using techniques similar to the first procedure, with slight modifications made depending on the reason for revision.
“Choosing a surgeon based on price rather than experience not only increases the likelihood of unsatisfactory results, but also puts patients at an increased risk for health complications,” said Dr. Fiorillo. “These patients are more likely to require revision surgery, and do not end up saving any money in the long run.”
Revision breast augmentation procedures can often be avoided by choosing a plastic surgeon who is skilled and experienced in breast procedures. Dr. Fiorillo has advanced training and many years of experience performing breast procedures in his New York City plastic surgery office. His revision procedures allow patients to fully enjoy the breast size, shape and position they desire.

Many women who have had a breast augmentation find themselves inspired to get out and purchase new lingerie that increases their confidence and helps them make the most of their new assets. But, lingerie shopping post-surgery does mean that women need to learn how to get the perfect bra fit for their new breasts. Here are some guidelines that women can follow when bra shopping!
1. Make sure that the band is even across your back - if the back of the bra isn’t straight across, it won’t offer adequate support. It’s not uncommon for women to purchase a bra that is pulled up towards the sides of the back by the straps, but this doesn’t do them any favors physically or aesthetically.
2. Make sure that the front band of the bra sits against your ribcage - if you buy a bra that is essentially floating over your breasts rather than resting below, then you have chosen the wrong size bra. The under wire and the base of the cups should be against your ribcage, not the breast tissue to provide support. Of course, you don’t want the front or back band of the bra to be so tight that it digs in either.
3. Choose a bra that gives your breasts a nice shape – cups that are too small for your breasts can create a lumpy look due to inadequate coverage. Make sure that you have appropriate cleavage that is supported.
4. Buy a bra that fits on the loosest clasp – your bra can stretch in time, so when you buy one, make sure it fits adequately on the loosest clasp so you can make it tighter as needed.
5. Remember, you may have new support requirements – following a breast augmentation, you may require different levels of support than you did previously. This means that cuts and styles you shopped for before may no longer work. A professional bra fitting can make sure you get what you need!

Surviving breast cancer is a triumphant thing for many women who have successfully fought the illness; but that doesn’t mean they aren’t left with physical and emotional scars from their fight. Thirty-seven percent of women who overcome breast cancer have full mastectomies that can cause them to lose one or both of their breasts. For many women, this is a hard change to accept as they feel as though they’ve overcome the illness, but still lost a part of themselves. Fortunately, reconstructive surgery can help give women back their breasts if that’s their choice, to make them more confident with their appearance.
Reconstructive surgery following breast cancer is less common in older women over the age of 70, because many feel they just don’t need to put their bodies through any other recovery at their age. However 1 in 3 women who have recovered from breast cancer do choose surgery, and the large majority of these women are under the age of 70. They know they have long lives ahead of them and simply want to get back to where they were before overcoming breast cancer, emotionally and physically.
Reconstructive surgery can be done immediately after or a mastectomy or even years later. In many cases, breast reconstruction surgery is covered by private insurance since it’s classified differently than breast enhancement surgery for women simply looking to improve their physical features.
Decisions of how to proceed after breast cancer recovery are personal ones, and women should choose based on what they feel will help provide them with confidence and allow them to take control over their lives again.

According to the National Clearinghouse of Plastic Surgery Statistics, sponsored by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US, and has seen a 36% increase in the number of procedures performed each year as compared to 2000.
