A varicose vein is one in which the valves are not working properly and then vein fills with blood. This leads to unsightly swelling and can cause a great deal of pain.
One of the most common cosmetic procedures to rid the body of varicose veins is called vein stripping. This procedure removes the affected veins from the legs. It also is called vein stripping with avulsion or ligation.
Once you come into Dr. Fiorillo’s New York office, he will examine you to determine if you are a suitable candidate for varicose vein surgery. Most often, you are a good candidate for this procedure if you have pain and throbbing from the affected veins; blood clots; bleeding from veins and/or open wounds.
The doctor will examine your leg(s) to see what is causing the vein and where the improperly operating valves are. He may use an ultrasound device to afford him a better view of the affected veins. Or he may use a duplex scan to obtain a close up of the veins. The scan will provide him with a highly detailed image of the affected vein and the blood flow.
Vein stripping usually is done outpatient, and can take one or two hours to complete. If your situation is more complex, it could take longer. You could have general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia, depending upon your diagnosis.
The doctor will put an incision at the top and bottom of the affected vein. One cut is usually in the groin, and the other is further down the leg. Then, he inserts a thin wire made of plastic into the vein. The wire is tied to the vein and is pulled through the incision in your lower leg. Then the incisions are closed and you are bandaged and given compression stockings to facilitate healing.
